What is Wellness in Living?

These days society is abuzz with the importance of achieving and maintaining wellness in our lives.  That is because when we are well, we are more likely to live happier and more productive and fulfilling lives, and achieve more of our personal goals and aspirations.

www.definitionofwellness.com  offers an excellent overview and resources about wellness.  Here are some of its reflections:

Wellness is  “a multidimensional state of being describing the existence of positive health in an individual as exemplified by quality of life and a sense of well-being.” Charles B. Corbin of Arizona State University.

Wellness is not necessarily only a state.  It is more like  a process, and a largely subjective one at that; meaning each of us determines what wellness means in our lives.

Wellness has many dimensions.  They include:  Social Wellness, Occupational Wellness, Spiritual Wellness, Physical Wellness, Intellectual Wellness, Emotional Wellness, Environmental Wellness, Financial Wellness, Mental Wellness, and Medical Wellness.   If one considers these dimensions of wellness in the context of disability, it becomes readily apparent that aspiring to achieve wellness in disability can present extraordinary challenges  because of the barriers and preclusions  persons with circumstances of disability face in society.  Needless to say too, so can maintaining dignity in living with circumstances of disability, because to live without wellness is also to live without dignity.
