Lack of awareness and acknowledgement of persons with circumstances of disability is a systemic attitude of society. It probably stems from the disability fear factor arising from disability being seen as an undesired medical phenomenon or illness. It is the precursor to the lack of acceptance of disability. Being ignored or denied as a person on account of being seen as disabled, has also always been a systemic problem in human society. Any person in circumstances of disability will tell you that they find themselves constantly being treated as an aberration of humanity; the typical response being to ignore or deny their presence and their needs, or worse yet, to avoid them or make them unaffordable. They will also tell you that they must strive to find communities and environments that see their humanity beyond their physical appearance. Moreover, for one to have the appearance of unwellness in disability only serves to exasperate the lack of awareness and acknowledgment they face on account of being seen as disabled. Thus addressing the sources of our human reservation about disability, and enhancing the communication skills we use in the presence of it, are a good beginning to enhancing wellness in disability. In essence, we must find a new awareness of the meaning of disability in society.
